Giving up is not normally something that is thought of as being a positive thing to do. Quiting, failing to complete something, or abandoning in a project is something that is commonly looked down on and not encouraged in society. So why in the world am I giving up, and what am I giving up on?
I'm giving up, and I know this is the right thing to do, because this is what I'm giving up on:
I'm giving up on serving myself. I'm giving up on living for myself. I'm giving up on being the owner and ruler of myself. I'm giving up on trying to find lasting happiness in the temporary things of this world. I'm giving up on blaming other people for my own sin issues. I'm giving up on putting my hope in things that will fail me.
Giving up normally leaves you with a sense of failure and lack of accomplishment but in this case it is exactly the opposite. Giving up has never given me so much peace. In giving up I've traded in worry and frustration with peace, sorrow and emptiness for everlasting joy, and failure with victory. Jesus gives us the right to give up on trying to find joy in this world, and to instead look to Himself as the ultimate source of joy and life.

Lydi, thanks for this expression. Makes me want to follow suit.
